On Earth, there is a balance between incoming insolation and outgoing radiation. We know that they balance each other because the Earth is neither warming up or cooling down at an extreme rate.  This section provides a short introduction to the atmosphere, before looking at the Global Heat Budget.

2. Atmospheric Circulation and Ocean Currents

Atmospheric circulation is the global movement of the air, distributing the heat received from solar insolation from warmer to cooler regions. If the Earth did not spin on its axis the process would be much simpler (i.e. the air would simply move from the equator to the poles). However, it is considerably more complex than this and the three cell model is explained below.
